WILL YOU SUPPORT CHRISSY & ALL THE PREGNANT MUMMIES THAT COME TO BARC?

In Summary:

Chrissy, a beautiful, resourceful street mummer had to be separated from the angel who has been feeding and caring for her. She is now safe at BARC. Heavily pregnant we expect her to give birth any moment now.

Update: Chrissy gave birth to 7 puppies! She is also feeling much safer in the arms of our caring staff Muja & Made, among others.

Our desire is to turn one of the rooms downstairs at the Ubud Clinic into a nursery, that will benefit Chrissy and other abandoned mothers/mothers to be just like her.

To do this we need your support – and we would love to act quickly! Chrissy and the other mummy’s who come to BARC deserve a quiet, safe, comfy place to give birth and nurse their babies until they are ready to be weaned. Your donation will help us care for Chrissy and transform that dingy room into a puppy nursery! Please donate today…

Some history for you:

A nameless Denpasar street dog (who we have called “Chrissy” – because of the season), was being cared for by an angel – a lovely local lady (whose name we still don’t know) for years. The other residents in her apartment block, called a ‘kos’ here in Bali, and throughout the street were wary of Chrissy. They often shouted and threw rocks at her as they didn’t want her hanging around.

The day came recently, that Chrissy’s angel had to move… Her new landlord made it clear the dog wasn’t welcome, and for a variety of reasons (including the location she needs to live in and lack of other affordable accommodation options), there was nothing Chrissy’s angel could do.

A heavily pregnant street dog, residents in the old street throwing rocks and openly threatening to kill Chrissy if she were left behind, and no ability to take her to the new place – even though she desperately wanted to. This angel contacted BARC and asked for help!

We arranged a visit to assess the situation. Seeing that it was grave & hating to leave any animal in distress we picked Chrissy up and bought her to our Ubud clinic on the 30th December. Our medical team recently advised that she will give birth any day now!

The situation now:

Initially when we collected Chrissy we thought there was a great foster situation for her, but this didn’t work out. It is difficult in situations like this as it is preferably a minimum 8 week commitment and requires a location where they can remain separate from other dogs, therefore allowing the mothers to relax and get on with the job of being mothers rather than feeling they need to defend their puppies from others.

So instead, we have cleaned up an old treatment room downstairs. Here she can remain separated from the other dogs. She will be safe and can be medically monitored. However, understandably this dog was both terrified and traumatized. Part of that is a normal response for being very pregnant and recently removed from the only home you’ve ever known – even if it was the street! But part of this is also related to the only place we have available to keep her in – being a fairly barren room. Our staff have been working diligently to keep her calm and show her that we are not going to hurt her. In the last couple of days they are noticing great improvements.

Despite our best efforts at providing free sterilization and educating Balinese owners about how important this is, there are always those who do not hear the message. Situations like this come up all too frequently; female dogs that have been dumped when it is established that they are pregnant. Dumped puppies that are never sterilized, growing up on the streets and quickly become pregnant themselves. Or they may have recently given birth and been left to either fend for themselves or die on the streets with their babies. Sterilization and education really is a work in progress!

Our idea and a forward plan involves two aspects:

  1. A call for support with Chrissy. We need your help to cover the cost of caring for Chrissy and her puppies. She gave birth to 7 beautiful puppies and has become a protective, intend mummy. This means we will require: $40 USD per month to feed/provide care (puppies will be provided high quality supplement food from around 4 weeks old), $40 USD to vaccinate and then $40 to sterilize before they can go up for adoption.
  2. Some simple renovations. We would desperately love to improve the location Chrissy is being kept in at the BARC clinic. In essence our plan is to create a BARC nursery; a safe, comfortable, temperature controlled & welcoming place that supports these traumatized mothers to relax, give birth, and then care for their puppies until they are old enough to be weaned. When mothers aren’t using this location, we will utilize it for the young litters who must remain separated from the other dogs until they are vaccinated. Currently this is happening in cages near the front door, but the nursery will provide a much more relaxing and suitable situation for them.

Chrissy may very well give birth before we can have this prepared, but at the very least, with your help we can improve the situation for her!

Having assessed the situation, and with a vision of what we would like to create this would require:

  • The current cages removed (work estimate 500,000 rupiah, aproximately $38 USD)
  • Building and then tiling a partition so that we could house 2-3 mum’s and/or litters in the nursery (work estimate 12,300,000 rupiah – around $946 USD)
  • Decking it out with a whelping box, comfy dog beds, beanbags for volunteer/visitors, some basic shelving, birthing sheets and blankets (estimate 1,500,0oo rupiah – around $115 USD)

Estimated totals are: $760 USD for Chrissy and her puppies, then $1,099 USD for the nursery set up.

Will you help? Please donate today!

And of course, we will keep you all updated on Chrissy and the Puppies progress…
